Well this is what I do to get %80 percent of my income. %20 percent freelance jobs. This is the BEST job in the world!! BUT.... this is not the top of the Totem pole. I'm still pursuing that big job at a studio or becoming a successful independent artist somehow. I currently have no art director and my only deadlines I have are 2 to 3 minutes. This job is so fun and satisfying that I would do it forever, but, drawing faces isn't the only thing I want to draw. I can only imagine how it was for all those concept artists working on Avatar. Yes, they were stuck behind a desk working on this movie, unlike me, meeting all kinds of people in many fun places, but, the level of satisfaction these artists are having at this moment is what I want. I am making a living as an artist and it rocks! Being a caricature artist is like being a wedding singer, I'm still waiting for my second big break (caricature artist being my first big break). Follow your dreams everyone!!
kudos to you for already following your dreams, and if you play it right, balancing talent, work and commercial savvy, then you'll be escalating up that totem pole in no time.
i've been independent (i don't like the term freelance that much) for 6 years now. lots of highs and lows, and you only have yourself which is both exciting and dangerous. but in the end, the reward is greater (because you're not a slave to some exploiting ad agency or studio, etc).
of course, going solo isn't the automatic key to success and you might never get to work in movies like Avatar if you stay solo for too long - you need contacts and resume in similar works, in order to land a job in movies, etc.
me, i envy the art and concept guys over at Pixar. i grew up wanting to be an animator, then wanting to be a great advertising creative (was art director at ad agency for 5 years) and now i do mostly CD design and web design and illustrations, independently.
best of luck and success to you. you have an awesome gallery and i'll be watching!
I really appreciate your comment. It gives me a lot of comfort knowing that there is other artist out there going through the same. At this moment I still dont know where I see myself in 5 years. Am I going to be in a big company's studio or my own studio? Time will let me know I suppose. Good luck to you too and I am watching your art as well.
yeah, i think nobody actually can tell where they'll be 5 years from now. for me, going independent was a completely unforseen move, and a decision i made on the spot, and i don't regret it at all. every person gets and/or finds different opportunities. i wish you all the best on the endeavours that you find yourself involved in.
